Dan Sheild

Stone Creek Farms

As a backyard fruit grower, Dan Sheild desired to have one of every fruit tree that could possibly be grown in Minnesota. The least likely was a peach tree. It would often get into the -30s in his native state. While searching the Internet in 2009, he found Bob Purvis of the NAFEX Apricot Interest Group and learned from Bob the adverse effects of Winter sunlight on peach and apricot trees. Dan then set up a small one tree protection system. After three years of success growing peaches in his backyard, with a small system, he purchased a small farm at which he made large scale of the prototype in high tunnels that protected peach trees from the winter sun and cold of -36° temperatures, 60 cultivars later the farm has produced 10 years straight of peaches on the farm. going through many winters of -20s and -30s. Moving forward, Dan’s goal is to create a commercially viable system model that allows peaches of high-quality to be sold in the upper Midwest. The farm also grows many varieties of apples, pears, apricots, nectarines, plums, and heart nuts. Dan is a member of the Minnesota Fruit and vegetable growers Association, the Organic Fruit Growers Association , Land Stewardship Project and a member of NAFEX since 2010.
